For homemade bagel seasoning, combine 2 tablespoons toasted white sesame seeds, 1½ tablespoons toasted black sesame seeds, 1½ tablespoons dried onion flakes, 1 tablespoon dried garlic flakes, 1 tablespoon poppy seeds, and 1 tablespoon salt flakes. Store the mixture in an airtight jar. The seasoning can also be used with other recipes from Spices & Seasoning.Storage and Reheating
Store leftover turnip fries in a covered container in the refrigerator. Reheat them for a few minutes in the Airfryer until hot and lightly crisp again. Avoid reheating them for too long because turnips can become soft as they release moisture.Wine Advice

About Crispy Bagel Turnip Fries
Crispy Bagel Turnip Fries offer a different way to turn an everyday root vegetable into a simple Airfryer dish. Instead of potatoes, these fries are made from turnips cut into thin sticks and seasoned with avocado oil and bagel seasoning. The result is a savoury vegetable side with the distinctive flavours of sesame, onion, garlic, poppy seeds, and salt.
Turnips have a different texture and flavour from potatoes. They are slightly earthy with a mild peppery character, and their lower starch content means they do not become exactly like traditional potato fries. The air fryer does, however, help the exterior brown while the centre becomes tender. This makes them an interesting option when you want to add more variety to your Vegetables dishes.
Preparing Turnips for the Air Fryer
Cutting the turnips evenly is one of the most useful steps in this recipe. Fries that are approximately 6 mm thick cook at roughly the same speed, reducing the chance that thin pieces become overly browned while thicker pieces remain firm. Peeling the turnips first also creates a more consistent texture.
Only a small amount of avocado oil is needed. Tossing the fries thoroughly helps distribute that oil across their surfaces before the seasoning is added. The oil also helps the bagel seasoning adhere to the turnips during cooking.
Cooking the Turnip Fries
The fries cook at 200°C (392°F), which provides enough heat to brown the outside relatively quickly. Rather than leaving them untouched for the entire cooking period, the basket is shaken twice. This redistributes the fries and exposes different surfaces to the circulating hot air.
The total cooking time is approximately 15 minutes. Because turnips vary in size and moisture content, check their texture toward the end. The finished fries should be tender inside with lightly browned edges. They will not have precisely the same dry, starchy crunch as Potatoes, so avoid overcooking them in an attempt to reproduce conventional french fries.
Making Your Own Bagel Seasoning
The bagel seasoning is what gives these fries their distinctive savoury character. A homemade mixture can be prepared from toasted white sesame seeds, toasted black sesame seeds, dried onion flakes, dried garlic flakes, poppy seeds, and salt flakes. Once combined, it can be stored in an airtight jar for other recipes.
This mixture is useful well beyond turnip fries. Sprinkle it over roasted Vegetables, avocado, eggs, or other savoury dishes. You can also explore the Spices & Seasoning collection for more ways to add flavour to simple ingredients.
Serving Ideas
These turnip fries can be served as a Side Dish wherever you might normally serve potato fries. They work especially well alongside a meal from the Burgers collection, but they are equally suitable as a warm Snack.
A dipping sauce can make them more substantial. Creamy dips, mustard-based sauces, or a simple herb dressing all complement the onion, garlic, and sesame flavours in the seasoning. Serve the fries immediately after cooking for their best texture.
Storage and Food Safety
Turnip fries are best eaten freshly cooked. As they cool, moisture from inside the turnip gradually softens the exterior. If you have leftovers, refrigerate them promptly in a covered container and use the air fryer to reheat them. The circulating dry heat gives the exterior a better texture than reheating in a microwave.

With their short ingredient list and quick cooking time, these bagel-seasoned turnip fries are an easy addition to your Airfryer collection and a useful alternative to traditional fries.
