About this recipe
Sesame Soy Green Beans turn a simple vegetable into a flavourful side dish with just a handful of ingredients. Fresh green beans are coated with sesame oil, soy sauce, rice vinegar, ginger, garlic and a little chilli before being cooked quickly in the air fryer. The result is a vegetable dish with crisp edges, plenty of savoury flavour and a gentle touch of heat.
The combination of soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger and rice vinegar gives these beans a distinctly Asian character. They fit naturally alongside our China recipes and can be served with rice, noodles, tofu, chicken, fish or other vegetables.
A quick sesame and soy marinade
The marinade is what gives the green beans their character. Sesame oil provides a rich, nutty flavour, while soy sauce adds saltiness and umami. Rice vinegar brings acidity that keeps the seasoning from becoming too heavy. Fresh ginger, garlic powder, black pepper and crushed red pepper flakes complete the mixture.
The beans need only 5 minutes in the marinade. This short resting time is enough for the seasoning to coat their surface without softening the fresh beans before cooking. Toss them thoroughly so that the oil and seasonings are distributed as evenly as possible.
Cooking green beans in the air fryer
Cooking the beans in the Airfryer at a relatively high temperature helps create lightly roasted edges while the centres retain some bite. The recipe cooks the beans in two batches. This prevents overcrowding and allows hot air to circulate around the vegetables.
Shake the basket halfway through the 8-minute cooking time. This moves the beans around and exposes different surfaces to the hot circulating air. Depending on the thickness of your beans and your preferred texture, they may need a little more or less cooking time.
These green beans make an easy Side Dish and are particularly useful when the main part of a meal is already quite rich. The acidity of the rice vinegar and freshness of the ginger keep the beans lively, while sesame and soy provide enough flavour for them to stand alongside strongly seasoned dishes.
Vegan and easy to adapt
The ingredients are naturally suitable for a vegan or vegetarian meal. If you need the dish to be gluten-free, however, check the soy sauce carefully. Standard soy sauce frequently contains wheat, so use a specifically labelled gluten-free soy sauce or suitable alternative. You can find more plant-based ideas among our Vegan recipes.
Leftovers can be refrigerated and reheated, although the beans have their best texture immediately after air-frying. When storing cooked vegetables and other leftovers, cool and refrigerate them promptly. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) provides additional guidance on safe food preparation and storage at home.
With fresh ginger, savoury soy sauce, nutty sesame oil and a hint of chilli, Sesame Soy Green Beans are a quick way to give everyday green beans considerably more character without turning a simple side dish into a complicated recipe.
